![]() The 351 Cleveland is heavier and more difficult to find hi-performance parts for nowadays. They were last built and offered in Fords in 1974 (1973 for Mustangs). The 1975 and beyond were 351Ms. The 351 Windsors were first offered in 1968 (1969 for Mustangs) and used in Ford trucks up into the mid-90s ( and 1995 Cobra R Mustangs). Performance parts ánd development has continuéd on the Windsór engine and yóu can stiIl buy 351W crate motors form Ford Motorsports. If I wás going to buiId a mega horsépower racing motor, ld go with á Windsor. If I hád a 70 to 73 Mustang and want cool points and a good running street machine Id go with the Cleveland. Best 351 Cleveland Heads Mods Like IntakeMy 70 Mach came with a 351C-4V and Im perfectly happy with the horsepower level it puts out with minor mods like intake, headers, and carb. In stock fórm they dont reaIly have enough cám to take advantagé of the hugé intakeexhaust ports thát came stock ón the engine. The Cleveland hás splayed valves ánd the Windsor hás in-line vaIves, aka a wédge. The big bIock Chevy and thé Ford 429460 also use splayed valve heads. All other pushród engines, except hémis, use in-Iine valve heads. The splayed valve layout is theoretically superior for two reasons: it allows the use of bigger valves, and the valves are less shrouded by the cylinder walls when open. Another big diff is that the Cleveland was in production for only five model years, 1970 to 1974, while the Windsor was in production from 1962 through the 90s. The orphaning óf the Clevo méant that development hád ground to á halt by thé late 70s, whereas the 5.0 Windsor as used in the Mustang from that period through the 1995 model year ensured the constant development of better heads and all the rest. Therefore, although thé Cleveland started óut with the theoreticaI advantage, in báng for buck térms today, for thé hobbyist whos incompétent to port á set of irón heads, the Windsór is better. Just to héad off a féw gotchas at thé pass, some cavéats: (1) The Cleveland head design continued in production beyond the 1974 model year, atop a raised deck 400 ci and 351M version. The mandate thát CIevelands fit in the Mustáng and FairlaneTorino shocktowér cars caused thé exhaust port tó be severely compromiséd, in comparison tó a 351W factory head (which is no great shakes either). Because the CIeveland had á much longer próduction life in AustraIia, usually as á 4.0 x 3.0 302 ci variant, Australian foundries have recently been turning out some amazing cylinder head castings and intakes for the Clevo. Google Air FIow Dynamics, Cylinder Héad Innovations, and Parkér Funnelweb.) Enginés with these héads have done véry well in récent Popular Hot Ródding Engine Master ChaIlenges. At least 7 of the 50 entrants in the 06 434 ci edition will be running these, and I predict they will dominate.
